The Austrian singer Andreas Schager has been lauded as one of the most exciting and internationally acclaimed Heldentenors. His debut at the BBC Proms, in the role of Siegfried in Wagner’s Götterdämmerung (with the Staatskapelle Berlin, conducted by Daniel Barenboim), was referred to by a critic as the “sensation of the evening”. Classical Iconoclast highlighted that “True Heldentenors are rare and a singer like this is rarer still.” (29. 7. 2013), while Opernschnipsel wrote that “Schager struck like a bomb” (Siegmund in Die Walküre, Baden-Baden, 10. 7. 2016), and Der Neue Merker praised him as “one of the best Siegfrieds” (Maifestspiele Wiesbaden, 26. 5. 2017). His portrayal of Apollo in Strauss‘s Daphne (with the Cleveland Orchestra, under Franz Welser-Möst) was described by the Observer as “irresistibly sexy” (22. 7. 2015).
Andreas Schager studied at the Universität für Musik Wien. In 2009, he made his highly regarded debut at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl as David in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. His repertoire includes the roles of Florestan (Fidelio), Max (Der Freischütz), Rienzi, Tristan (Tristan und Isolde) and Siegfried (Siegfried and Götterdämmerung). Andreas Schager has appeared at the Deutsche Oper and Staatsoper Berlin, Teatro Real Madrid, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Teatro dell’Opera Rome and Teatro alla Scala Milan, on stages in Toronto, Cleveland, New York and elsewhere. He has dazzled as Apollo (Daphne) in Cleveland and at Carnegie Hall, as Tristan in Rome, he sang in Gurrelieder in Paris, excelled as Erik (Der fliegende Holländer) in Hamburg, at the Staatsoper Berlin and in Bayreuth (2016), as Tannhäuser in Antwerp, Siegmund (Siegfried) in Leipzig, Florestan (Fidelio) at the Staatsoper Berlin, and Parsifal in Bayreuth (2016 and 2017), where he has been invited to sing the role again in 2018 and 2019. In the 2017/18 season, Andreas Schager is scheduled to appear as Parsifal at the Hamburgische Staatsoper (Kent Nagano/Achim Freyer) and the Paris Opera (Philippe Jordan/Richard Jones), as Siegfried (Götterdämmerung) in Dresden (Christian Thielemann/Willy Decker), as Tannhäuser at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (Michael Bode /Kirsten Harms), as Apollo (Daphne) at the Wiener Staatsoper (Simone Young/Nicolas Joel), and as Max (Der Freischütz) at the Wiener Staatsoper (Tomáš Netopil/Christian Rath).
