Alexej Afanassiev

He was born in Siberia. He studied at the State Ballet school in Novosibirsk Russia for classical dance as well as modern and jazz dance. He graduated from the John Cranco ballet Academy in Stuttgart Germany. His pedagogs were Konstantin Russu, Petr Pestov, Alex Ursuliak. In 1997 he started to work at the Ballet  Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Duesseldorf under the leadership of Youri Vamos, he was a soloist from 1998. During that time he danced principal and solo roles in Ballets such as Youri Vamos’ „Romeo and Julia“, „Swan Lake“,“The Nutcracker - A Christmas Carol“, „Lucidor and Arabella“, „Midsummer Night’s Dream“, „Carmina burana“, as well as in John Neumeier‘s  „Sylvia“, also in works by Christopher Bruce , Mats Ek, Hans van Manen, and Petr Zuska . In 2005 he became a Balletmaster and was assisting  Youri Vamos, Jiri Kylian, Petr Zuska, Mats Ek, and other choreographers. He has travelled abroad to many theaters to stage the ballets of Youri Vamos.


Since 2009 he has been a ballet master at the National Theater of Prague under the direction of Petr Zuska.
