Biography

He is a Prague conservatoire graduate. He has further improved at vocal seminars in Weimar, Bayreuth and Sofia. He achieved his first engagement in 1980 in J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň. Since 1992 he had been a Prague State Opera soloist and also in 1992 he concurrently gave a guest performance in The National Theatre. His repertoire includes roles such as Verdi‘s Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Zaccaria (Nabucco), Banquo (Macbeth), Mozart’s Leporello, Masetto and Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Figaro and Conte Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Rossini’s Bartolo (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Dvořák’s The Water-Sprite (Rusalka), Smetana’s Kecal (The Bartered Bride), Janáček’s the Forester (The Cunning Little Vixen), and others. In 1995 he took part in The National Theatre guest tour to Japan and in September of the same year he accepted an engagement in The National Theatre opera ensemble. He has enriched his repertoire here by the roles of Capulet in Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, the title role in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, he has also created the roles of Jupiter in Rameau’s Castor et Pollux, Antonio (Le nozze di Figaro), Zuniga (Bizet: Carmen), Baron Douphal (La traviata), Sacristano (Puccini: Tosca), Abimélech (Saint-Saëns: Samson et Dalila), Harašta (The Cunning Little Vixen), Blacksmith (Martinů: the Miracles of Mary), The Recorder of Norwich (Britten: Gloriana), etc. His concert activities are also rich, f.e. Berlioz’s L’Enfance du Christ (conductor: Serge Baudo, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, 1998), Stabat Mater by Dvořák and Rossini (conductor: Matthias Elger, Berlin 2001, 2003), Stabat Mater by Karol Szymanowski (2004), Saint Ludmila by Dvořák (2004), Verdi’s Requiem (conductor: Matthias Elger, Berlin 2005), Händel’s Messiah (conductor: Kazuhiko Komatsu, Prague Symphonic Orchestra (2006).
