The conductor completed his studies at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien under Leopold Hager. Markovic also attended master classes with Gianluigi Gelmetti and Lothar Zagrosek at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. Aleksandar Markovic holds a scholarship from the highly renowned Herbert von Karajan Foundation Berlin.
He has been chief conductor at the Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck since 2005/2006. In the current season he is also music director of the new productions Mascagni’s / Leoncavallo’s Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake and Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette as well as the revival of Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer. He will also conduct concerts with the Tiroler Symphonieorchester Innsbruck; the programm includes Beethoven, Schubert, Prokofiev and Berlioz.
In his first season in Innsbruck he conducted a triumphal new production of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, a revival of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro and a new production of Strauss’s Salome, Verdi’s La traviata and Bellini’s Norma. In September 2004 he was already named music director of the Stanislaw Moniuszko Philharmonie after winning 1st prize at the Grzegorz Fitelberg Conductor’s Competition in Katowice (Poland).
In 2005/06 Aleksandar Markovic debuted with the Wiener Symphoniker at the Wiener Musikverein. Further debuts followed with the Deutschen Symphonieorchester Berlin, Mozarteum Orchester Salzburg, Prague symphonic orchestra, the Janáček Philharmonie, the Wiener Kammerorchester, Wiener Konzertverein, Symphonieorchester St. Gallen, the Rheinische Philharmonie Koblenz, and others.
His symphonic repertoire includes Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Berlioz, Debussy, Fauré, Dvořák, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov and Shostakovich. As a proponent of contemporary music, Aleksandar Markovic conducted the world premiere of Feuerlicht, Nachtschatten by Dirk D’Ase at the Wiener Musikverein.
