Adrian Clarke

Born in Northampton, Adrian Clarke studied at the Royal College of Music and the London Opera Centre. He has sung for leading companies around the world, including Bregenz Festival, Landestheater Salzburg, Royal Danish Opera, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, La Fenice, Venice, Dutch National Opera, Teatr Wielki, Warsaw, Singapore Lyric Opera, English National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival, Opera North, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera. Since 1994, he has been a regular guest at London’s Royal Opera House Covent Garden, where his roles have included First Sentry (Les Troyens), Donald (Billy Budd), John Shears (Paul Bunyan), Le Dancaïre (Carmen), Kostandis (The Greek Passion), The Librarian (Sophie’s Choice), Mitiukha (Boris Godunov), Sid (La Fanciulla del West) and Samiel (Der Freischütz). He also sang Baron Douphal (La traviata) with the company on tour to Japan. Clarke has become particularly well known for his interpretations of contemporary repertory. He created the roles of the Librarian (Sophie’s Choice) and the Maharal (Golem) and sang in the premieres of The Merchant of Venice, I am Goya, Unsungen, Europera 3 and The Griffin’s Tale. He has also sung Deceit (The Triumph of Beauty and Deceit) for Channel 4 and the title role in Blond Eckbert for Muziektheater Transparant.
